Who’s wearing the pants in your relationship? It is quite a common phrase, but how did it come to that? Amazonian women were the first in history to wear that typically manful garment, but trousers became a widely spread trend in the feminist circles starting with the middle of the 20th century. That’s why it is pretty simple to understand the origins of the phrase, as the first women to wear pants were commonly known as strong and independent.

In Great Britain during the Second World War, because of the rationing of clothing, many women began to wear their husbands’ civilian clothes, including their trousers, because of their practicality as work apparel. Or it just might have been that the ladies got tired of sweeping the trash from the streets with their long skirts. The pants creeped slowly but surely into women’s fashion, first as a necessity and later as a fashion trend. The opinions, on who was the first designer to introduce pants to women’s fashion, are quite divided, but Paul Poiret and Coco Chanel are most certainly one of the pioneers.

At the very beginning of this movement men had serious issues with women wearing pants, because it was quite controversial and closely related to the independence amongst ladies, but with the raise of consciousness came the approval of men. Also it is quite obvious that a very big part of that is creditable to the fact that pants on women look sexy.

In the last century, this popular garment has changed its shape and size over and over again, starting as a long and wide piece of clothing which primarily provided comfort, all the way to the skimpy Daisy Dukes which provided an extra boost of confidence. Designers have changed the way they look each season, and we are pretty much sure they will keep changing their appearance in the future as well. That’s the whole point of fashion trends, they change from season to season, and for this spring designers are kicking out the tight neon colored pants and replacing them with wider, flowy fabric, print trousers. The only constant when it comes to pants is that they are always trendy, no matter their length, style, color or material.
